Access Champions

Does your business have an Access Champion? Or maybe you’d like to be one? Find out what it means.

Ensure the business complies with Disability and Equality Regulations
The Access Champion will keep abreast of Disability and Equality Regulations and understand their implications for the operation of the business, and ensure that management and staff are informed of these implications through meetings and reports.

Be a contact point for disabled customers and for staff
The Access Champion will provide a point of contact, to answer enquiries from disabled existing and potential customers (and from staff) about the accessibility of the business’s infrastructure, products and services, to consider and respond to disabled customers’ comments or complaints and to answer queries and concerns from staff over Disability and Equality Regulations and disability awareness.

Co-ordinate and administer staff training
The Access Champion will co-ordinate and administer the disability awareness training programmes undertaken by the business’s staff.

Review the accessibility of the business
The Access Champion will review the accessibility of the business’s infrastructure, products, services and information, either:

  • Formally, through a third party accessibility assessor; or
  • Informally, against an appropriate standard.

Maintain the business’s Access Statement
The Access Champion will ensure that the business’s Access Statement is kept up to date and is made available to customers through the business’s website and through other channels.

Evaluate and follow up on customers’ comments and complaints
The Access Champion will evaluate comments and complaints received from disabled customers and members of their parties and either pass these on to customer service staff for action or, where they relate specifically to the accessibility of the business’s infrastructure, products, services and information, respond directly to the customer or their party member.

Be the main contact point for specialist organisations

The Access Champion will provide the main point of contact for specialist organisations which provide information and/or assistance to disabled travellers and tourists and those who travel with them, to ensure that the business’s details are kept current on specialist directories and websites, that website links are maintained and that the business’s relationships with these organisations operate smoothly.
